How to Secure Home Wireless Network ?

wireless-securityMany of us use wireless router in our home so that we can access internet from any where inside the home from laptop. But we always forget to take security steps to prevent unauthorized use of our wi-fi or we can say our wireless home network. So to restrict unauthorized use of your wireless network you need to follow some of the basic preventive measures whenever you setup an wireless network at your place.

Im quoting you out with 6 Steps to secure the wireless network and my tutorial will be based on Linksys wireless router, no need to worry here because in almost all wireless routers configuration system is all same with little bit of difference which you can easily detect out.linksys wireless-router

1. Enable Router Encryption :

Most of the routers by default have encryption disabled so its all necessary to change this setting first. You need to select one from two WPA or WPA2 wireless encryption to avoid misuse of your wi-fi network.

To do so all you need to do is log on to your wireless router control panel via its ip from your browser in PC.

Then click on wireless tab then on wireless security and then select the type of encryption you want.

There are few encryption options available they are as follow :

WEP (Wired Equivalent Protection) 64-bit and 128-bit :

Its an oldest wireless encryption standard and can be hacked easily so never ever use it.

WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access):

This is an upgraded version of WEP and is more secure then it. Most of the laptop support WPA standard.

WPA2 :

This is the best and the latest version of Encryption standard . Always try to use this but before using this do check out that both of your laptop and Wireless adapter support this.

You can check below for Encryption configuration in linksys wireless router :

2. Changing the SSID name :

SSID means Service Set Identifier , which is used to reference the name of your wireless router connection. This is the name which will be appeared on your laptop when you are searching for wi-fi connections available.

To do it click on Wireless tab and then on Basic wireless setting there change the Wireless Network Name (SSID).

This measure may not provide any security so try to keep some scary names to your wi-fi which may create an awkward impression of your network on the hacker.

3. Disabling the SSID Broadcast :

This one type of password referencing to your network indirectly. That is when you disable SSID broad cast no one  will be able to see the name of your network.

To do so click on Wireless tab then on  Basic wireless settings there click on disable radio button so that your network name will not be broadcasted.

When you have disabled the SSID broad cast the first time when some one connects to your wi-fi network he will be asked for the SSID name.

Check out below image for the same.

4. Enabling MAC Filter :

So we have done 3 Steps to secure an wireless network , many times they are enough but due to many vulnerability in the routers Hackers can easily hack out your wireless network. So to prevent them doing so you need to follow three more steps.

One of the best way to avoid unauthorized access is to allow only trusted laptops to access the wireless network. To do identify the trusted laptop’s MAC (Media Access Control) Address and allow only known addresses.

To do so first of all you need to collect the MAC address of all the laptops from which you want to access the wireless network.  To get the MAC address of the Laptop you need to fire a command. In linux you need to fire ipconfig and in windows ipconfig /all and then you will get MAC address as shown below.

MAC addres

MAC address

MAC address is also known as physical address.

Now get on to the Wireless Router configuration menu there click on Wireless tab then on Wireless MAC filter then click on radio button showing enable MAC Filter. There after click on Permit PC’s litsted to access the wireless network.

As shown in below figure :

enabling-mac-filterThen click on Edit MAC filter list and add the MAC address’s of all the System which can only access the wireless network. After adding the list click on save settings.

5. Changing Password for Accessing web :

Many manufacturer of the wireless router keep the same password as default for the web access avoid this and set new password to protect your wireless network.

To do so click on Administrator tab there on click on Management. There you can change the password  easily as shown in below figure.

Always try to keep some strong password which cannot be cracked easily. And also dont keep so strong password that even you forget  it out.

6. Disabling administrative access through web :

And the final most step is to disable the web access to your wireless routers admin panel. Once you have done this the configuration of the router can only be done via Ethernet port.

To do this click on Administration tab then on Management and there select Disable Wireless access web.

So now you have done with the security measures to secure your wireless connection. And one more thing to keep in mind is that always keep your wireless routers firmware upgraded. Upgrade it within regular period of time.

Still if you have any query about wireless security or if you have been struck at some of the steps from the list then comment your query below we will try to solve it out.
